Petite Martinique is situated less than three miles from north east of Carriacou. The island is of volcanic formation and contains approximately 486 acres of land with a population of around 900 people.

This tiny circular volcanic cone rises out of the sea northeast of Carriacou. Most of Petit Martinique's inhabitants make a living from the sea, and the island enjoys one of the region's highest per capita incomes.

The islanders have a reputation for their independent spirit, as well as a bit of notoriety for smuggling. The island has a school, church, guesthouse and a grocery shop-cum-bar, police, and banks. There's one road on the western coast, though most people get around on foot.

Marriage celebrations are big occasions on the island. A week before the wedding, the groom?s wedding cake is made and the traditional rite of wetting the ground with rum and water for good luck is done. A few days later the procedure is repeated, this time for the bride.

Relatives of the betrothed hoist red flags in front of their homes to show their support for the marriage.

Two days before the knot is tied the bride and groom?s families hold a great feast which is usually accompanied by musical string instruments. A cake dance is performed by the mothers of the couple.
